IN WHICH I FIND THAT EYE SURGERY HAS TAKEN THE WIND OUT OF MY SAILS!

I don't know why surgery on the second eye would be more exhausting than the first but it was.  I had to lay out for a few days and consequentially did not finish my leaves and flowers for SS border.  I did manage to do a bit of on line shopping. One always feels a bit at loose ends when a major project is finishing even though I have several projects lined up.  Here is my new pattern and fabric:

I can already see I will need to change it up as the size is really to small for really snuggling in and getting warm.  I ordered extra background so I have some to play with.

Have you made any plans for the great eclipse of August 21?  We are lucky enough to live very close to the most optimal pathway.  Here is a map showing the path of the eclipse:

If we go about 40 miles north we will be in the "path of totality" and the world will be dark as night for a couple minutes.  (There is also a nice quilt shop in this town)! Apparently this is a very rare astronomical event the next one concurring for us in about 500 years.  We are going to take a picnic and make a nice day of it.

AND NOW .....
YOUR MOMENT OF ZEN!

This is an amazing spot near Salzburg, Austria in the Salzkammergut mountains.  You can take an old fashioned train to this summit which is 1783 meters or 5850 feet high.  The ride lasts about 35 minutes and, from the photos of the trip, looks like there are some hair-raising moments on the side of steep cliffs.  When you reach the top, you have a 360 degree view of the Alps and several lakes lying below you.  The sweet little house is a guest house.

I entered Salzmammergut into google translate as German is always interesting in how they construct one word out of several.  Google translates this as "salt chamber good".  I can see "salt" as these are white limestone mountains.  "Good"  also applies.  But "chambers"?  I know the limestone in Missouri is riddled with caves so maybe that is what is implied by "chambers".  Please, any German speakers set me straight.

Update Monday 4-17...I received a very informative email from Bonnie reminding me of the movie Monument Men in which Allied troops hid precious works of art in the salt caves around Salzburg.  So that answers 2 questions:  Salz is for salt and not just for the white of limestones, and kammer does mean chambers or caves ergo: good salt chambers!  Love it when a mystery is solved though I could have googled Salzburg and found the answer for my lazy self.

Thats all for today.  I am beginning to pick up my strength and energy which I really miss so maybe next week will be better.  I hope you have a nice Easter and good week.

  2. I hope you are starting to pick up now, how are the eyes? My Dad found an instantaneous difference in his sight, mind his developed so rapidly he was almost blind when they were taken off. I remember taking him home and he stopped when entering the garden and said 'look at the colours, I have never before seen such wonderful colours'. I hadn't heard about this eclipse, although from the trajectory I doubt it can be seen from the UK. There is no way on this earth I could get my husband to visit the guesthouse, but it looks mind-blowing. Thank you for that. Lovely pattern, I can see the attraction, but at 56 inches square it is the perfect size for me, I'm only 5' 2" and I could cuddle up nicely under that, although I think aesthetically I would probably add another inch or two.

  3. Take your time recovering and don't rush it. Eye sight is too important to to hurry along. I like the Over & Down Under pattern. That should make a very nice quilt. And there is no applique. Blessings!

  4. Ooh, what a fun new pattern!! I know what you feel about the Finished Project Funk. It's bittersweet, because on the one hand it's finally DONE, or near the finished line -- but on the other hand, you've been working on it for so long that it becomes a part of you and there is a sadness that it's coming to an end, not unlike the last day of a great vacation. I'm glad to hear that your eye surgery went well for you. Take care of yourself!

  5. Your new project should be gorgeous. That is a great pattern. We toured Austria and Switzerland many years ago and did see wonderful sights -- but not this one. (Thank goodness as I probably would have flipped out!) But I did remember hearing about salt mines/caves in the general area. I believe I read about them when I read the book Monuments Men who were tasked with finding art stolen by the Nazis. Some of the art was taken into old salt mines. Thus, a long story to explain their might be salt chambers (mines) nearby. Or not. I would love to know how well you are doing with close up vision. I assume you had cataract surgery. I hear great results for distance but I wonder about what it does to close up vision.

  7. Wow! Boy, I'd love to stay at that guest house. :D Sorry about your second eye recovery being worse. That's not fun at all. I get that "at loose ends" feeling, as well, when I'm approaching the end of a major project, even though I have tons of things to switch to. I also get extremely antsy and impatient with the last bits of work, and find myself wanting to just walk away from it. Having to push myself through that funk right now! heh!

  8. Oh - and the eclipse - We're really looking forward to it. It's the day after my 50th birthday, and Scott's folks' place is exactly on the center line! So we're driving up there for a family eclipse party.

  9. Sorry to hear that your eye surgery has knocked you back - I do hope that you soon feel better. Your new project looks amazing - what a wonderful design. I am looking forward to following your progress. An eclipse is a great experience. We had an 'almost total' eclipse here in France some years ago. xx

  11. Sounds like your body knows that it needs a bit more time to heal. I'm glad you can take that time :)

I really like that woven-looking quilt pattern. That will be a neat one! As for the totality, thanks for the reminder. We have no idea where we'll be, but would sure like to see it!

  12. As we live in the lower Southwest, we'll pretty much be deprived of the eclipse. What an awesome photo of that guest house. Thanks for sharing it.
